How to open a New Zealand bank account here
The easiest way to set up a New Zealand bank account is to apply online now.
If you need to talk to someone, talk to our International Banking Services team who are happy to help by phone or email.
Once your account is set up, you'll:
- receive a welcome letter containing important information (keep the letter in a safe place as you'll need it later)
- be able to deposit money into the account
- need to activate your account when you arrive in New Zealand.
How to deposit money into your New Zealand bank account
Make an international money transfer from your home country. That way, you'll have easy access to cash when you arrive in New Zealand.
You can deposit up to the equivalent of NZD$1 million into your New Zealand bank account as soon as it's been set up, or any time after that. To transfer more than NZD$1 million contact the International Banking Services team.
The bank you transfer from may charge fees for the transfer. They will advise you of their fees and how to go about making the transfer.
ANZ's SWIFT code is ANZBNZ22.
Unfortunately, we cannot accept cash or cheque payments until you arrive in New Zealand.
How to activate your New Zealand bank account
You must activate your New Zealand account before you can withdraw or transfer money out of your account.
Read the welcome letter we send you when you open your account. It will tell you which branch to visit to activate the account.
Bring these documents and details to the branch, as mentioned in the welcome letter:
- your passport - the original, not a photocopy
- your account details
- proof of address as verification.
The staff at the branch will activate your account and give you an ANZ EFTPOS card. They will also check whether you need any other banking services and help you to set them up.
EFTPOS cards mean you don't have to carry cash
EFTPOS cards are very popular in New Zealand and allow you to purchase goods, pay for services or withdraw money directly from your bank account. You can use your EFTPOS card at most retailers and at ATMs (Automatic Teller Machines) around the country 24 hours a day, which can save you the hassle of carrying cash.
Worried about fees?
When you open an account with ANZ before you leave your country, we'll waive the account fees until you activate your account in New Zealand.
ANZ may charge a standard fee to accept an inward international money transfer, or for use of your EFTPOS card at non-ANZ ATMs. See our fees and charges for more information on fees that may apply.
Didn't set up an account before you left home?
If you didn't set up an account before you left your home country, locate and visit any ANZ branch and we'll be able to help. Bring your passport - the original, not a photocopy - and documents that confirm your New Zealand address.
Eligibility criteria apply. Fees are subject to change. Accounts are only available to persons who will be living in New Zealand for six months or more. For more information about fees, opening a bank account before you arrive in New Zealand, or about any of our accounts, please contact us any time, day or night. Please read our Reserve Bank disclosure statement.
