Scotty Baragwanath believes more than most that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. And that’s exactly why this committed foodie decided that breakfast was the meal he was going to turn his attention to.

Scotty Baragwanath believes more than most that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. And that’s exactly why this committed foodie decided that breakfast was the meal he was going to turn his attention to.

"I saw a real opportunity there. Breakfast is the most transactional meal of the day, some of us eat in a rush on our way to work and don’t even know if we’ve had breakfast. I thought it would be great if we could create something that when you get to work, you feel engerised and excited at the experience you’re about to have."

And so Blue Frog was born. Inspired by Scotty’s childhood nickname, Blue Frog delivers a unique, delicious and slightly irreverent take on breakfast cereals.

"First and foremost it’s about bold flavours. If it says peanut butter and raspberry then you open your bag and those flavours will jump out at you."

Scotty is a firm believer that you ‘eat with your eyes’. The cereals are chock full of colours and textures, some of them ones you wouldn’t necessarily expect. Take their ‘Kaipara Kumara’ cereal, currently their biggest seller, but it wasn’t always that way.

"We like to break the rules a little. We did get a lot of strange looks when we launched, who puts kumara in a cereal?  But it works," says Scotty.

Scotty says he and the team had been keeping a close eye on the wholefoods movement happening around the world. They had a vision and they were determined to stick to it.

"Arguably there may have been an easier path, we may have stepped left of centre a little too far, but that’s been part of our learning over the past four years."

The team has also learnt a lot about Kiwi breakfast eating habits, and it turns out, getting Kiwis to try something new is no mean feat.

"Breakfast is one of those at the extremes where people have a set regime and they come in very blinkered and buy what they are used to."

From humble beginnings four years ago with a staff of 1 (Scotty) selling at food markets, the Blue Frog label has taken off. Backed by a team of 13 in its South Auckland factory, Blue Frog is now available in 350 stores in New Zealand, more than 500 in Australia and has just launched on Amazon in the USA. Pretty good for the company which attracted more than its fair share of naysayers.

"We had people saying to us ‘you have picked the toughest category, do you have a point of difference?’ We have shown a lot of people we have what it takes."

ANZ has been a key partner for Blue Frog in two main ways. The first being the provision of FastPaydisclaimer, a mobile merchant payment system, enabling payments on the go when the team used to sell at the markets. Secondly, the exclusive third-party offers that ANZ has signed up for its business customers have helped to make business easier for Scotty and BlueFrog. As their global success continues to spread, Scotty still finds most enjoyment in the little things.

"The ultimate reward is when we get one-on-one contact with our customers. I love nothing more than watching them taste our cereal and their eyes rolling into the back of their head and hearing them say 'that tastes incredible.'"

As for the dream...well global domination of course!

"We want to make the brand accessible all over the world. We want to be the brand globally that people think of and smile when they are having breakfast."
