Here are your Summer Internship options:


Commercial, Agriculture and General Business

Where: Flexible (main centres include Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington and Christchurch)

Length of the programme: 8 weeks

Our goal is to help our customers to start or buy and sustainably grow their business to create a vibrant business community. As a relationship driven business we have relationship banking teams based across the country.

Understanding our customers and the industries in which they operate, combined with local market knowledge means we are strongly positioned to help them reach their goals.

We are focused on delivering an easier and increasingly customer centric proposition as well as adding insights and unrivalled market connections for small-medium enterprises through to larger privately owned businesses.


What to expect in your 8 week internship

The work activities interns undertake will support the business and our customers to get results. You will have opportunities to work autonomously but also within and across teams, assist with looking after a customer portfolio and/or contribute to the delivery of projects to support Business staff. There are also networking events to attend during your internship that will put you in touch with the right people to help build your knowledge of ANZ’s business and culture.


What makes a good Business intern

We’re on the lookout for motivated all-rounders to take on every challenge that comes their way; are great with people and can articulate in a connected, and simple way. A curious mind is a must but skills within data analytics/coding and modelling can also be beneficial within someof our Intern areas.

Interns who thrive in a team environment, but are equally motivated when working alone, make great candidates. While a degree in Commerce, Agri, STEM or Business or previous customer-facing experience would be a plus, we’re simply looking for motivated, talented applicants from a diverse range of qualifications. So no matter what you’re studying, don’t be afraid to apply.

In addition to your academic record, we’re genuinely interested in what makes you unique! Sports, community work, travel, achievements and experiences all add to your knowledge and ability. ANZ interns are a diverse group of individuals who all bring something different to the table; they are all-rounders with good communication and interpersonal skills which is something we truly value.

Personal Banking

Location: Auckland

Length of Programme: 8 weeks

We are often thought of as the face of ANZ, helping customers through our branches, business centres, contact centres, mobile mortgage managers, customer service operations and insurance teams. We are a large, diverse and energetic part of the bank where our banking specialists and top team of support staff navigate a banking landscape full of change, customer insight, product development and technology. We are focused on creating the bank that future home owners want to be with, blending the very best of digital technology with banking relationships that add value and expertise to help our customers get on top of their money.

The financial wellbeing of our customers is so important to us. We seek to understand the needs and aspirations of our customers to give them the best possible solutions. From deposit accounts and credit cards to personal loans, home loans and a whole lot more, our teams drive the business forward and make sure that in an ever changing world, we have the solutions in place to meet our customer’s needs.


Would you make a good Personal Banking Intern

We’re looking for flexible, adaptable individuals who want to be a part of the biggest area of our operations - people who want to grab opportunities with both hands and experience all of the challenges and rewards this programme has to offer.

Successful interns are passionate about customers and their needs. They have a strong customer focus and can build effective working relationships with their peers and stakeholders alike. We’re looking for people who are comfortable working behind the scenes with technical data, research and analysis-based tasks and have the skills to communicate solutions clearly and effectively.

The people with the skills and capabilities we’re looking for will be coming out of all the faculties including Business, Commerce, Law, Arts, and Sciences. We know you’ve got more to offer than official grades.


How does the programme work?

The best way to learn is to do. We give you real life experience in our head office teams, with the outcomes of your work having an impact on how we work and how we continue to improve customer experience.

Here are some areas you could be working in:

  • Products: These teams are focused on managing the day to day of our products across ANZ. Your work will include exposure to a portfolio providing you with an introduction to Product Management and working on an initiative to deliver great customer outcomes.
  • Business Governance and Controls: This team has a broad scope that covers all aspects of our operations including supporting the business to make sure we are well managed, that our staff are safe at work and meeting our regulatory requirements as well as delivering key enhancements for the business. You will also have the opportunity to work on specific projects that will show you how we are constantly working on improving our products and processes to deliver great customer outcomes.
  • Contact Centre: We interact with about 1 million Kiwi’s every year, managing over 3 million customer calls and 600 thousand emails. We are constantly improving the experiences we provide for New Zealanders. You will be working on these innovative projects using global best practice assessment methods and improve how we help 1 in 5 of all Kiwis thrive each year.
  • Customer Experience & Performance: With a wide range of responsibilities, this team supports our Frontline teams with their day to day operations through performance management metrics with a whole lot of change enablement in between. You will see how the Frontline team works, what our customers really think and deliver change that will bring great improvements to staff and customers alike.
  • Specialist Distribution: This team is home to ANZ’s mortgage, insurance and migrant acquisition specialists who work with insurance companies and mortgage adviser firms to deliver on our home buyer and protect strategies. You will be an active part of this team from day one, owning project outcomes and working across all aspects of the channel including product, operational risk, governance, marketing, customer experience and frontline engagement.

Institutional Intern Programme

Location: Auckland

How long: 8 weeks (December 2020/January 2021)

Institutional Banking is one of the most dynamic and diverse areas of ANZ. We focus on offering specialised finance, insights and relationship solutions to Institutional clients across the globe. Many of our clients are household names, including large New Zealand-listed companies and subsidiaries of multi-nationals.

This division holds the number one market position across New Zealand’s major banks in all relationship, product and services categories. The division is also number one in the Trusted Advisor, Relationship Manager Capability and Overall Satisfaction categories.

As an Institutional Intern you’ll work with market leading teams, focusing on developing an understanding of clients’ businesses or industries and providing solutions for their complex financial needs.

We put the client first. No matter where they are, or what they do, our relationship and product teams work closely to make sure customers are getting the seamless business solutions they need. As an Institutional Intern, you’ll be building your global networks from the get-go.

How does the Intern Programme work

We give you the chance to learn from some of the most experienced bankers and inspiring professionals in the region. Over eight weeks, you’ll have the chance to network, develop skills and gain an understanding of the different areas of the broader ANZ Institutional business.

As an Institutional intern you’ll be doing real work with a diverse team on large well-known customers. By the end, you’ll be well placed to confirm whether a career in banking is for you.

Instead, we invite you to take part in a series of games which assess a range of abilities. That’s it.

If you move to the next stage, we’ll invite you to complete a Personality Questionnaire. There are no right or wrong answers, we just want to learn more about how you prefer to work.

From here, you’ll be invited to do a digital interview (you can interview from the comfort of home), where you record your answers to prompts in a series of short videos. Finally, we’d love to meet you via a video link as part of our virtual assessment centres which include an interview and case study.
