Phone scammers posing as the ANZ Fraud Team

In November 2021 we began getting reports of customers receiving text messages with a link to pay a customs fee for a parcel to be delivered. This is still occurring. Do not click on the link in these messages. The link leads to a fake site that requests your credit card and account details, personal information and security codes.

We're now aware that, after receiving the text message, customers are being targeted by phone scammers posing as the ANZ Fraud Team. The scammer claims there are unauthorised transactions and asks for you to tell them a security code they send to your phone. The calls appear to come from an ANZ phone number - 0800 269 296.  These calls are not from ANZ.

There have also been reports of the phone scammers asking security questions in an attempt to obtain additional customer information.

  • If you think you have been the victim of this type of scam please call us immediately on 0800 269 296 (international +64 4 470 3142).  Please call us on 0800 838 123 to speak to our bi-lingual staff.
  • Stay vigilant when anyone contacts you out of the blue with unusual or urgent requests.  If you are unsure if it's a genuine phone call, hang up immediately and call the company back (including your bank) on their listed number to check if it's legitimate.
  • Never disclose your banking passwords, PINs, security codes or personal financial information to anyone even if they say they are from the bank or the Police.
  • If you receive an unexpected or suspicious text message or email never click on a link or download an attachment in it.
  • Don't let anyone have remote access to your devices, regardless of where they say they are calling from.
  • Report scam text messages to the Department of Internal Affairs at 7726.
