We’re aware of scammers using malicious apps and software (also known as malware) to target customers and steal personal, banking and card information.
These scams often begin when a customer is persuaded to download an app, file or software from an unverified source. Scammers may promote these through social media, online advertisements, websites, text messages, emails or messaging platforms, making them appear legitimate and trustworthy.
Once installed, it may allow scammers to control your device. This can enable them to access information stored on a device, including online banking details, card information and other sensitive data.
How to protect yourself
Scammers often rely on customers acting quickly without taking the time to verify what they're downloading.
Be safe with apps and software
- Only download apps from trusted sources, such as App Store— or Google Play™— store.
- Be cautious of apps, files or software promoted through social media, online advertisements, websites or messaging platforms.
- Never install apps, or software, or allow remote access to your device or screen at the request of someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
- Review app permissions carefully and remove apps you no longer use.
- Enable biometric login, such as fingerprint or face recognition, where available to add an extra layer of protection.
- Use strong, unique passwords and protect your banking credentials.
Keep your devices protected
- Keep your device operating system and apps updated with the latest security updates.
- Use device security features such as screen locks, facial recognition or fingerprint authentication where available.
- Consider using reputable security software to help detect malicious activity.
- Be wary of unexpected messages or pop-ups urging you to install apps, software or security updates.
If you think your device is infected
- Disconnect your device from the internet immediately.
- Avoid logging in or entering passwords until your device is secure.
- Run a full antivirus, security scan or seek professional IT support to remove any malware. You can reach out to the National Cyber Security Centre for support.
- Contact ANZ directly using the phone number or contact method listed on our official website.
Shop safer online
If you have an ANZ Visa card, you can use a dynamic security code when shopping online.
Instead of using the security code printed on the back of your card, you can use a dynamic security code that updates every 12 hours in the ANZ goMoney app. This helps limit the number of fraudulent transactions if someone gets a hold of your card details online.
In goMoney, go to Cards > select a Visa card > select Show card details.
