Bank impersonation website scams

May 2026

We’re seeing an increase in scammers targeting personal and business customers with bank impersonation websites and social media content. These scams are designed to trick you into installing malicious software (malware) or tools that allow scammers to access and control your device.

You may be lured to a fake ANZ website, claiming there is an issue with your account, suspicious activity, or that urgent action is required.

Once on the fake site, you may be prompted to click options like ‘Live Chat’ or similar, this action downloads a file that can install software or malware onto your device. Don’t download unverified apps, software or files from unofficial sources.

Malware can infect your smartphone, tablet, or computer, allowing scammers to:

  • Access your online banking and login details
  • Steal personal information and data stored on your device
  • Monitor your activity or take control of your device
  • Impersonate you to carry out further scams or transactions.

How to help protect yourself

  • Never download unverified apps, software or files from unofficial sources.
  • Never give strangers access to your devices, including remote access or screen sharing.
  • Never save your passwords, PINs, card details or login details to the browser or your device.
  • If you receive a suspicious message or call, hang up and contact ANZ directly using the phone number or contact method listed on our official website.

Always pause and reassess the situation. More about protecting yourself against scams.

If you think your device is infected

  • Disconnect your device from the internet immediately.
  • Avoid logging in or entering passwords until your device is secure.
  • Run a full antivirus, security scan or seek professional IT support to remove any malware. You can reach out to the National Cyber Security Centre for support.
  • Contact ANZ directly using the phone number or contact method listed on our official website.
