Remote access and investment scams

October 2025

How this scam works

Scammers phone or message customers claiming to be from a bank, other financial institutions or a trusted organisation and say their bank accounts have been compromised or suspicious transactions detected. They often appear or sound very convincing.

They instruct people to download remote access software onto their devices including phones, then guide them to log in to ANZ Internet Banking while the scammer controls the device. They may also ask for online banking login details, credit card details, Online Codes or Visa Secure codes to be disclosed. Once remotely connected, scammers may move funds, set up payments or obtain OnlineCodes and Visa Secure codes to confirm transactions.

Investment scams that escalate to remote access

Fraudsters lure people with fake investment opportunities by phone, email, WhatsApp or social media.

After initial engagement, the scammer persuades the person to allow remote access to set up trading platforms, verify accounts or complete transfers.

Remote access gives the scammer full control of your computer, phone, and/or online banking. This can lead to large losses.

How to stay safe

  • Do not grant remote access to your devices through links in emails or texts, or in response to unexpected phone calls.
  • If you receive a message or call from someone claiming to be ANZ or another bank, hang up and contact ANZ directly using the phone number or contact method listed on our official website or by calling us from within the ANZ goMoney app.
  • Always verify the sender's email address, phone number, or the caller's identity. If it looks suspicious, do not engage.
  • Never click on links or download attachments from unknown or unexpected messages. Access Internet Banking through the official ANZ website.

Our fraud team may call or message customers from time to time to verify unusual transactions. However, we will never ask you:

  • For your banking passwords, PINs, or two-factor authentication codes
  • For your full credit card details
  • To transfer money to a 'safe' account, purchase gift cards or set up crypto currency accounts
  • To download software or remotely access your device.
