Bank card collection scam
September 2025
How this scam works
Scammers are impersonating bank staff, often over the phone, and convincing Kiwis to hand over their bank cards and PINs.
Scammers contact people directly and claim to be from their bank, saying that their credit, debit or EFTPOS card has been compromised and needs to be urgently replaced. They then offer a ‘secure collection service’ and instruct the person to place their card and PIN in their mailbox for pickup. In some cases, scammers are asking for the PIN over the phone and remote access to devices in an attempt to also access the customers online banking.
Once collected, the offenders use the stolen cards and PINs to make ATM withdrawals and purchase items, like gift cards. This scam is happening across Aotearoa.
This type of scam is particularly deceptive because the offender appears to be helping the customer protect their account from fraud.
How to stay safe
- If you receive an unexpected call, hang up and contact ANZ directly using the phone number or contact method listed on our official website or by calling us from within the ANZ goMoney app.
- Your bank will never ask you to leave your bank card and/or PIN in your letterbox to be collected or turn up at your door to pick it up. We don’t offer a ‘secure collection service’.
- Never click on links or download attachments from unknown or unexpected messages. Always access Internet Banking through the official ANZ website.
- Never provide your OnlineCode, Visa Secure code, Internet Banking login details, credit card details to anyone. ANZ will never ask for this information via email, text, or phone call.
- Do not grant remote access to your devices through links in emails or texts, or in response to unsolicited phone calls. Our fraud team may call you to verify unusual transactions, however we will never ask you for remote access.
