Stewart Brentnall1,  Chief Investment Officer, ANZ Wealth

Stewart Brentnall

Stewart took up the position of Chief Investment Officer in July 2012. Prior to this he had been Chief Investment Officer for ANZ owned OnePath Australia since February 2010.Stewart leads the centralised investment office for ANZ’s Wealth Division. The function will deliver an overarching investment strategy, including responsibility for asset allocation, investment themes, investment manager and product selection and monitoring. Investment compliance, risk and analytics processes will also be delivered through a centralised governance framework. Outputs from this function will be delivered to customers across all channels in Australia, New Zealand and Asia.

Prior to joining OnePath Australia, Stewart spent 22 years in the investment management industry, including senior roles at BT Financial Group, Queensland Investment Corporation, Goldman Sachs, and Schroder Investment Management. He has been an analyst and fund manager for Australian and Global Equity portfolios as well as Multi-manager funds. Over his career he has been located in Sydney, Brisbane and London.

Stewart has an honours degree in economics and he is a Chartered Accountant, a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and a Fellow of FINSIA.

Graham Ansell, Chief Investment Officer

Graham Ansell

Graham is responsible for the management of the ANZ Investments Investment Management team. His previous role was Head of Fixed Interest, with a primary focus on duration and yield curve management.

Before joining ANZ Investments in 1996, Graham worked for the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. He spent four years in the Bank’s Monetary Policy Implementation section and a further four years in the Foreign Reserve Management office managing US dollar, yen and deutschmark fixed interest portfolios.

Mark Rider2, Head of Investment Strategy & Asset Allocation
Mark Rider

As Head of Investment Strategy and Asset Allocation, OnePath Australia, Mark is responsible for driving ANZ Wealth’s investment strategy and outlook on future asset sector opportunities for new and existing products within Australia, New Zealand and Asia.

Mark commenced at ANZ Wealth in April 2013, having previously spent 15 years at UBS, nine years of which at UBS Global Asset Management where he was most recently Head of Investment Strategy, Australia, and a key member of UBS’ Global Investment Solutions (GIS) team.  In this position, he was Chairman of the Australian Investment Committee and strategist for the Australian multi-asset portfolios with responsibility for Australian economic and investment strategy research.  Mark was UBS’ Australian Chief Economist from 1997 to 2003. Prior to joining UBS, Mark spent 10 years at the Reserve Bank of Australia with his final role being Head of Economic Activity and Forecasting. 

Mark holds a Master of Science (Economics) from the London School of Economics, and a Bachelor of Economics (Honours) from Macquarie University (Sydney)

Third Party Managers, Strategy and Currency

Stuart Millar, Head of Diversified Portfolio Management
Stuart Millar

Stuart is ANZ Investments’ investment strategist, responsible for the portfolio management of New Zealand-based diversified portfolios and the Private Bank International Equity Fund. 

As a member of the Investment Strategy and Asset Allocation team (within the global Office of the Chief Investment Officer), his research responsibilities focus on developed market equities and currency.

Stuart has been with ANZ since 1998; he was appointed to his current role in 2011. His previous experience includes a business analyst role with Alcatel in New Zealand and broad experience in stock lending and emerging markets with JP Morgan Securities in London.

Alan Clarke, Senior Mandate Research Manager, Strategy
Alan Clarke

Alan is responsible for ANZ Investments’ multi-manager approach to international equities, global property and fixed income. This includes the qualitative and quantitative analysis of ANZ Investments’ global managers. Alan joined ANZ in 2006 before joining the investment team in 2007.

From 2000 to 2005, Alan worked with investment firm Morley Funds Management (UK) and with Dutch fund-of-hedge-funds company, Theta Capital Management.

Alan graduated with first class honours from the University of Waikato with a Master of Science (Technology) and is a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) Charterholder.

Maaike Van Tol, Asset Allocation Strategist
Maaike Van Tol

Maaike is ANZ Investments’ Asset Allocation Strategist, responsible for the asset allocation recommendations for the diversified funds offered in New Zealand and Australia. 

Maaike started at ANZ in August 2015. Her previous roles include Strategic Advice Specialist at ING Investment Management and Structured Products Portfolio Manager for IMC Asset Management in the Netherlands.

Maaike is a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) Charterholder and graduated from the University of Auckland with a Bachelor of Technology in Industrial Mathematics (First Class Honours).

Fixed Interest and Cash

Iain Cox3, Australasian Head of Fixed Interest and Cash
Iain Cox

Iain has been with ANZ for seven years and was appointed Head of Fixed Interest and Cash in New Zealand and Australia in March 2014.

With over 19 years’ experience in funds management and investment banking, both locally and overseas, Iain has specialist knowledge and experience of both the domestic and global credit and interest rate markets.

Formerly a portfolio manager at a privately owned and Auckland-based retail fund manager, Iain has also held roles involving product and operations control for Salomon Bros, Citigroup, Barclays Capital and Credit Suisse First Boston, supporting fixed income cash and emerging market and derivative businesses in London and Milan.

Iain has a Bachelor of Arts (Joint Honours) Accountancy and Economics from the University of Manchester.

Ian Ross Hunt, Portfolio Manager, Fixed Interest & Cash
Ross Hunt

Ross has been with ANZ for four years and was appointed Portfolio Manager for New Zealand Fixed Interest and Cash in March 2014. In this role, he is responsible for fixed income and cash market analysis, trading and portfolio management. Previously, he was Fixed Interest Analyst for ANZ Investments.

Before joining ANZ, Ross was involved with a family business in the New Zealand wine industry. In 2004, he relocated to New Zealand from Australia where he had held roles in equities dealing and treasury operations.

Ross holds a Master of Applied Finance (Merit) from Victoria University in Wellington and a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) from the University of Otago.

Peter Jones, Senior Manager, Fixed Interest and Cash
Peter Jones

Peter is responsible for management of the international bond offering. He has additional responsibilities within ANZ Private and Fixed Interest.

Peter was appointed to this role in 2013, having previously been Head of Fixed Interest for ANZ Private. He first joined ANZ in 1989, working in a range of Treasury roles, including money markets, derivatives, bonds, credit, primary markets and on structured credit desks. Peter also has experience with international bond markets, including two years based in New York covering New Zealand dollar, Australian dollar and emerging markets debt.

Peter is secretary to the Regional Investment Committee and a member of ANZ Private’s Investment Management Committee.

Ray Jack, Credit Analyst, Fixed Interest and Cash
Ray Jack

Ray works as a fixed interest analyst for ANZ Investments. Previously he was an equity analyst in the Equities team and has 13 years’ experience analysing Australian and New Zealand listed companies. He has served on ANZ Investments’ Asset Allocation Committee, which is focused on making tactical and strategic asset allocation decisions for global equity markets, fixed interest markets, currencies and commodities.

Ray holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Economics and Finance, as well as a Diploma in Financial Planning.

Mia Prkusic, Fixed Interest Analyst
Mia Prkusic

Mia has recently been appointed to the role of Fixed Interest Analyst for ANZ Investments. She is responsible for supporting the portfolio managers with daily liquidity management, delivering targeted and timely research. This support helps provides the team with the knowledge to preserve capital, as well as adding to the wider fixed interest function through its committees, meetings and discussions.

Mia joined ANZ through the Graduate Programme in 2013, before moving into the Portfolio Management team as a portfolio and advisory associate.

Mia holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Finance and Accounting from the University of Auckland. She has completed her exams and is currently working towards becoming a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) Charterholder.

Equities

Mark Brown, Australasian Head of Equities
Mark Brown

Mark was appointed Head of Equities in December 2011 and became Australasian Head of Equities in March 2014. As well as having final responsibility for the overall domestic equity proposition, he manages the Australasian equity strategy.

Mark joined ANZ in 2002 as an investment analyst in the Equities team. He was promoted to Head of Research in 2005, and in 2006 he became an Investment Manager, responsible for ANZ Investments’ Trans-Tasman equity mandates.

Previously, Mark was Director at HSBC Asset Management. He started his career as a financial controller in South Africa, later joining Foord Asset Management in 1997.

Mark graduated from the University of Cape Town with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1985 and an MBA in 1995. He became a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) Charterholder in 1999.

Craig Tyson, Equity Investment Manager
Craig Tyson

Craig is responsible for ANZ Investments’ specialist Australasian listed property and infrastructure mandates. He joined ANZ in May 2005 as an investment analyst in the Equities team and was promoted to Investment Manager in January 2006.

Craig migrated to New Zealand in 2003 joining Forsyth Barr, with responsibility for several high-profile New Zealand companies, including part-coverage of the property sector. Previously, he spent seven years at Fuji Investment Management in London as an equity analyst and later Investment Manager responsible for European equity portfolios.

Craig graduated in 1993 from City University (London) with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree. He worked on the London International Financial Futures Exchange before completing a Master of Science in Investment Management from City University Business School in 1995.

Craig Brown, Portfolio Manager, Equities
Craig Brown

Craig was appointed Portfolio Manager, Equities in September 2014, responsible for the New Zealand Share Fund and Equity Selection Fund.

Craig joined ANZ Investments in 2008 as an Investment Analyst in the Equities team and was responsible for research in both the equity and listed property sectors. He was promoted to Head of Research in 2014.

Formerly a principal at an Auckland-based boutique funds management firm, and with 17 years’ experience in the industry, Craig’s skills include asset and investment sector research, portfolio management, and strategy. He has specialised in New Zealand and Australian equities, and in the listed property markets.

Craig has a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Lincoln University.

John Middleton, Head of Australian Equity Research
John Middleton

John joined ANZ in 2014 as Head of Australian Equity Research and brings with him 16 years’ experience in the financial industry. Most recently, John was Senior Analyst at AMP Capital Investors in Wellington.

John migrated to New Zealand from the UK, where he had spent 14 years in London working for JP Morgan Cazenove as Head of Aerospace and Defence Equity Research, and at ABN Amro as an equity analyst.

John holds a BA in Modern Languages (French and Russian) and European Studies, and a PDOM from the University of Cape Town.

Justin Philips, Senior Investment Analyst, Equities
Justin Philips

Justin is a senior investment analyst for ANZ Investments and has over 14 years’ experience in the funds management and broking industries. He joined Macquarie Bank as a futures and options broker in 2000, later moving to HSBC Asset Management as the principal equities dealer. Following its acquisition by Challenger Financial Services, Justin moved into the Property Securities team, where he was both dealer and analyst for a further six years before joining ANZ.

Justin holds a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and Investment, a Diploma of Financial Planning, and is a qualified physiotherapist.

Wholesale and Institutional Distribution

Graeme Thomlinson, Head of Wholesale and Institutional Distribution
Graeme Thomlinson

Graeme has been with ANZ since 2002. With 14 years’ investment industry experience in the UK and New Zealand, Graeme has had particular exposure to investment operations, the custody industry, trustee issues, and client service.

As well as client management, Graeme has responsibility for promoting and selling ANZ‘s investment capability to research houses, investment consultants and the broader wholesale and institutional investment market.
