What is biometric information?
Biometric information is the physical or behavioural features that are unique to you, such as your fingerprints, face, voice, or how you type.
We use biometric information to verify your identity and help detect and prevent fraud. For example:
- Voice ID uses your unique voice print to verify your identity and help detect and prevent fraud
- During online identity verification, we compare your selfie photo or video with the photo on your identity document you provide
- Collecting behavioural biometric information helps us check it’s you using your device, and detect fraud and scams, based on how you interact with your device (such as how you swipe, scroll or type).
We partner with trusted third parties to provide some of our biometric processes.
How do we use your biometric information?
We use biometric information for limited purposes, as set out in our Privacy Statement.
Using behavioural biometrics on ANZ digital platforms
When you use ANZ goMoney, Internet Banking, or our ANZ Institutional Digital Services—, we collect and use behavioural biometric information to improve fraud and scam detection and protect your money better.
Behavioural biometric information includes information about how you interact with your device, for example, how you type, swipe or scroll. We can combine this information with other information we collect, such as information about your device (including your device type). Using this information can also help us identify when behaviour on your account is inconsistent with your usual patterns.
We will notify you about the collection of this behavioural biometric information from the outset and remind you about it from time to time.
To find more about how we use behavioural biometric information, see Using behaviour to enhance fraud detection.
Using a selfie photo or video to confirm your identity and help prevent fraud
There may be times during your banking experience with us when we ask if you would like to provide a selfie photo or video to help verify your identity and help prevent fraud.
This may happen when you are:
- Joining ANZ using goMoney
- Verifying your identity online.
The use of this technology lets you manage the ID verification process online, without having to visit any of our branches.
When we do this, we collect, use and share your biometric information to verify your identity and help prevent fraud.
Here’s how it works:
- If you have scanned your ID, we’ll ask you to take a selfie photo or video using your mobile device
- We’ll assess if the face in the selfie photo or video matches the photo on the identity document you provided
- We also use the details from your ID to verify your identity electronically and securely share them with our third-party provider, who compares them against government and other approved records or sources
- We’ll let you know if your identity verification has been successful.
You need to choose this option to verify your identity online. If you don't want us to collect your biometric information, you can choose to verify your identity in person at a branch instead.

Using a voice recording to confirm your identity and help prevent fraud
You can use Voice ID as an additional authentication method and an extra layer of fraud prevention for certain banking transactions when logged in to goMoney, or when talking to our Contact Centre.
You may be prompted to verify your identity using Voice ID instead of a PIN or password.
To use Voice ID, you need to agree to us collecting and using your voice prints which are your biometric information. If you don't want us to collect your biometric information for Voice ID, you can be identified by other authentication methods including PIN Verification, Caller Check, and Click to Call .

We will always notify you when biometric information is collected, including the purposes for which it will be used and where you can obtain further information about biometric processing. For ongoing collection, we will provide you with a reminder of our information collection from time to time. Your biometric information is stored securely and access is restricted to authorised staff only. We retain this information in accordance with our data retention policies.
