Safer online shopping with Visa Secure

Your ANZ Visa Debit and credit cards can help provide an additional layer of fraud protection with Visa Secure when you’re shopping online.

How Visa Secure works

When you're making an online payment on a site protected by Visa Secure, you may be asked to confirm if it’s you making the payment. This can happen in two ways.

If you have an up-to-date version of the ANZ goMoney app, you’ll receive an ANZ Payment Check with Visa Secure in the app to confirm the payment. If you don’t have the app, a Visa Secure Code will be sent to your mobile via SMS, which you’ll need to enter to complete the online payment.

ANZ Payment Check with Visa Secure

If you receive an ‘ANZ Payment Check’ notification on your device, asking you to log into your ANZ goMoney app, it’s important to do so. This is to confirm if it’s you making an online payment or not. Here’s how it works:

1.  When making an online payment on a site protected by Visa Secure, a Visa Secure window might appear. It will ask you to confirm it’s you making the payment.

2.  If you receive an ANZ Payment Check notification on your device, it will prompt you to log into goMoney. You can tap the notification to go directly to goMoney, or you can leave the webpage to open goMoney.

3.  Log into goMoney and check the payment details, including the merchant name and payment amount, and choose either:

  • Yes, I’m making this payment to confirm it’s you so the payment can be processed
  • No, I’m not making this payment to decline the payment.

4.  If you are making an online purchase, after confirming, your payment will be authenticated but not yet completed. Return to the website where you started your purchase to complete the payment.

5.  If you selected ‘No, I’m not making this payment’, the payment will be declined. We recommend placing a temporary block on your card and calling us immediately via goMoney or on 0800 269 296 (or +64 4 470 3142 from overseas, charges may apply) to help protect your banking.

If you don’t have goMoney yet, find out how to register for the goMoney app so you can start receiving ANZ Payment Check notifications. It's another layer of fraud protection to help protect you from scams and fraud.

Visa Secure Code

A Visa Secure Code is a one-time passcode sent to your registered mobile by text message.

When you’re making an online payment on a site protected by Visa Secure:

  1. A separate window will ask you to confirm it's you making the payment
  2. You’ll receive your Visa Secure Code via SMS text message. Enter this code into the payment window on the merchant’s webpage.

You should never share a Visa Secure Code with anyone, including ANZ staff. It should only be used to enter into a merchant’s site for a payment you’re making.

If you receive a Visa Secure Code text message when you didn't initiate a payment, someone may be trying to use your card without your permission. This could be a fraud attempt, report it to us immediately on 0800 269 296 (or +64 4 470 3142 from overseas, charges may apply). Or you can report your card as lost or stolen using ANZ goMoney or Internet Banking.

Lost or stolen card details

If you think your card or card details have been stolen, report it as lost or stolen, and we’ll cancel and replace it. You can also place a temporary block easily on your card in goMoney.

Tips to keep safe online

  • Never share your full credit card details, goMoney login details, or Visa Secure Code or online codes with anyone, even someone claiming to be from Visa or your bank.
  • Always access your online banking through the goMoney app or Internet Banking on our website (www.anz.co.nz), never from links in text messages or emails.

If you have any questions, please call us on 0800 269 296 or call us from within the ANZ goMoney app. If calling from overseas +64 4 470 3142. Call charges may apply.

Use dynamic security code

Dynamic security code is an extra layer of protection for your ANZ Visa card when shopping online.

Instead of using the security code printed on the back of your card, you can use a dynamic security code that updates every 12 hours which helps limit the number of fraudulent transactions if someone gets hold of your card details online.

Your dynamic security code is available in goMoney, go to Cards, choose a Visa card, then select Show card details.
